ORIGIN: The Brush barked, and we listened.
Do I look like the type of person who would use the word friend indiscriminately? A book is a book, and a dog is a dog. One staves off boredom, and the other wards off loneliness. But that is not my definition of friendship. I don’t want to just build my vocabulary. There’s no point in broadening my horizons if I can’t do the same for somebody else. Friends should push each other to do better. But I can’t give anything to a book, and I am sick and tired of feeding dogs.
Dogs are king. Just follow the leash, we are the power behind the throne. People don’t get along, there is always loneliness at the gates. But wolves refused to play along. They could have had the world at their feet, but they chose to keep howling at the moon. Fools. They brought extinction upon themselves, the only loneliness we care about is our own. We have more craters to fill than the moon, but at least dogs were willing to learn their place.
Sorry to disappoint, I have always been a cat person. I don’t see hunger when I stare into a dog’s abyss. Some people call it love, but all I see is a full stomach. I can’t tell whether it’s an act or whether food is really all it takes for dogs to pledge their love. Cats, on the other hand, don’t put on an act. What you see is what you get. The feral glint in their eye is a promise, and I like knowing where I stand with my cat. The fact that when I become carrion, it won’t hesitate to devour me.
Sure, dogs have tails, but that doesn’t make them shooting stars. I would never waste my wishes on them. A dog is what you settle for when you are a child that hasn’t learned to play well with others. Effortless companionship. Do you really think that I would waste a wish knowing that a coin or two would do? I save my wishes for the impossible. Understanding another human being. I am the type of child that puts effort into his friendships, even if it’s in vain.
Mermaids and dogs aren’t all that different. If it were just an ordinary shipwreck, you might survive unscathed. But once a song buries its claws in you, you can kiss your chances of returning home goodbye. The same goes for dogs. Once you make a dog your best friend, you can abandon all hope of ever having a meaningful relationship with another human being.
